The consideration payable in cash will be £5m goodwill and £8.1m of fixed assets. Once the value of stock is taken into consideration, however, the value of the deal could rise to between £18m-£25m.

The acquisition is expected to add around £175m to Lookers’ annual turnover and enhance profits in the first full year of ownership.

It represents the Manchester-based dealer group’s first purchase since the drawn-out battle with rival Pendragon for at the beginning of the year.

Lookers’ chief executive Ken told the deal was representative of the group’s strategy to expand its range of .

So far this year Lookers has boosted the number of Land Rover sites it operates by three as well as adding two Volvo and Jaguar dealerships in a multi-million pound deal with HR Owen at the start of the year.

“Our stated strategy has been to strengthen the mix of premium brands that Lookers operates. The market is going the way of the premium brands. You can see both BMW and Mercedes strengthening their market share and our strategy is in response to those market trends,” he said.

Surgenor said that the group had been keen to add Mercedes-Benz to its portfolio and did not rule out adding to the newly acquired franchise but said that was dependent on the manufacturer and the sites that became available in the future.

“We’re delighted to be approved by Mercedes. It’s a brand we’ve wanted to represent for some time,” Surgenor added. The deal covers four Mercedes sites in Redhill, Gatwick, Eastbourne and Brighton, with the latter also selling Smart; two ChryslerJeep outlets in Hatfield and Romford; two Lexus sites in Hatfield and Brighton; and Land Rover sites in Acton and South Kensington.

In 1990, General Motors capitalized on consumer’s intense dislike of the auto purchasing process and introduced the Saturn. Saturns were, and are still, sold at a flat price with no dickering, dealing or haggling. Today, almost 25% of car buyers purchase vehicles from flat price, or no-, dealerships. But are they truly saving money?

At no-haggle dealerships, cars are priced at a flat rate that typically includes a standard options package and a built in profit for the dealer. Additional options may be sold in flat-rate packages or a la carte. At regular dealerships, cars are displayed with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price but everything including options, warranty, financing and dealer profit is negotiable.

Research has shown that educated consumers pay much less for cars at regular dealerships than at no-haggle dealerships. This is because regular dealers set average profit goals over time. For example, if they sell five cars, the average profit per car should be a certain amount, say $1,000. That means of those five cars, three could sell for $1000 profit, but the dealer could make $2000 and $0 profit on the remaining and still hit their goal. At a no-haggle dealership, the profit goal is fixed per car, meaning that while you will not pay $1000 more because you have poor negotiating skills, you will also not save $1000 if you have good ones.

There are certain people who historically do from purchasing cars from no-haggle dealerships. Young adults, women and minorities in particular, have historically paid higher prices than other groups at regular and may benefit from no-haggle pricing. In fact, reacting to the trend of more and more young people turning to no-haggle dealerships for their automobile purchases, Toyota introduced the in 2003. The Scion is a that comes with trendy options packages and is priced and marketed directly at young people who don’t want to negotiate to purchase their car.

Therefore, if you are willing to do the research and confident in your negotiation skills, you will almost certainly save money at a regular dealership unless you want a Saturn or Scion. Then you’ll have to pay the same price as everyone else. However, if you’re timid, too busy to research or spend time making a deal, or in one of the groups that historically are offered worse deals, you may be better off at a no-haggle dealership.

On a hill overlooking Music City, a remarkable pair of Tennessee brothers have quietly devised a solution to one of the Motor City’s oldest and more expensive testing problems.Corvette being tested for water leaks using ultrasound

It’s the Car-Gate Ultrasound Arch System, a technology which could save the automotive industry billions of dollars each year. The Car-Gate Arch is the latest innovation from Gayle Technologies’ founder, Jimmy Gayle, who has been providing the automotive and racing industries with technical solutions for more than 20 years.

The development of the Car-Gate Ultrasound Arch was born from the need for automobile manufacturers to find new ways to test their vehicles for wind and water leaks often found in window, trunk and door seals. The problem is that the current test for finding these leaks causes damage to the car and trucks they test.

Currently, billions of dollars in damages are caused each year to automobile inventories by the use of what automakers call a water booth. During the final phases of manufacturing, a water booth is used to spray a car or truck with high-pressure streams of water to find leaks. Unfortunately, by using this process of finding leaks with water, the interior and electronic components of automobiles often get ruined by the water that leaks into them. Illogical as it might sound, it is how the automobile industry has been doing it for years.

The Car-Gate Ultrasound Arch, however, uses ultrasound in place of the damaging water. However the benefits of Gayle’s Ultrasound Arch are much greater than merely finding the leaks. Jimmy Gayle Says, “Beyond the Car-Gate’s ability to accurately finding leaks in cars without causing damage, the most exciting thing it does for manufacturers is collect data as it finds the leaks.”

With a combination of Gayle Technologies ultrasound leak testing technology and the company’s customized diagnostic software, automakers will be able to produce powerful trend analysis reports. These trend analysis reports will give automakers the ability to improve overall quality in their manufacturing processes, body design, and supplier materials.

Chrysler, Ford, Toyota, Mercedes, and Nissan are some of the manufacturers currently testing the Car-Gate Ultrasound Arch System. One industry insider is already using the expression “Gayle Rating,” to describe the exact measurement of a vehicle’s quietness and air tightness as determined by this remarkable new system.

“The water-saving feature is also an added benefit we didn’t really think about in its initial conception,” Jimmy Gayle said. “The Car-Gate will also help the environment, and we are proud to play a big part in that important task.”

The cost savings the Car-Gate Ultrasound Arch System offers the automotive industry is dramatic. An industry study has shown that replacing the interior and electronic parts damaged by water booths can cost as much as $4 million per manufacturing plant each year. This is not good news for the already financially beleaguered automotive industry.

The Car-Gate Ultrasound Arch System is a state-of-the-art solution to an age-old automotive industry problem. As Gayle Technologies’ president, Tommy Gayle said, “It’s the answer to improving overall quality of cars, and better yet, it will improve the bottom line of the automakers that will use it.” [PRWEB]

(QT Auto News) — While American auto manufacturers experienced dismal November sales, total American Honda and Acura sales increased 6.4 percent over last year to 105,860. Honda’s primary growth was due to Honda truck sales followed by car sales.

Honda’s Civic sales were strong in November increasing by 18%. The 2006 Civic was recently announced by Motor Trend as the “Car of the Year.” Both this announcement and higher gasoline prices may have accelerated sales.

Honda’s Acura line suffered in both car and truck sales. Sales of the Acura MDX dropped nearly 32% compared to 2004 November sales. One would expect that with higher gas prices, SUV sales would drop. Yet, Honda’s Pilot, an economized version of the MDX, showed a sales growth of 9.8%
