Buying a used Audi A4 can be a great way to get a good luxury vehicle for a decent price. Typically, they run from $4000 up to $15,000. However, what kind of expenses can you expect after you purchase? This article will run through some of the basic problems common to used Audi A4s, as well as a few things to watch for when you do your search.
Replace the Timing Belt
The timing belts on earlier model A4s need to be replaced more frequently than manufacturer suggestions, which will cost around $700 to $900. If this part breaks, serious engine damage can result and so you will need to do this repair ahead of time
Oil Sludge
Water can get into oil and create a gelatinous mass, which can also cause serious engine damage. You will need to change the oil every few thousand miles, and use only synthetic oil. This will alleviate this common problem.
Ignition Coils
The ignition coils often go bad, leading to misfiring. This is more a problem on the 1.8 engine than the 2.8. Fortunately, this is not an overly expensive repair.
Mods
If you want to add mods, know that the 1.8 has more mods available than the 2.8. With the 2.8, all you will be able to do is basic modding, like upgrading the engine control unit.
Quattro
The Audi is known for their four-wheel drive, called “quattro.” This version of A4s drives much better and smoother than the front-wheel drive, and may Audi owners recommend it.
Year
With used Audi A4s, the pre-2000 models are drive-by-cable and are thus easier to tune and easier to mod. After 2000 they are drive-by-wire, which is more difficult to work with. If you are planning on doing a lot of modding, the 1999.5 is a good sweet spot as it is still drive-by-cable but has many of the upgrades of the later vehicles.
Keep in mind the above points when you are shopping around. Make sure you have an extra grand so for the likely repairs you will need to perform. Of older luxury used cars, Audi A4s can be a great choice, especially if you do a bit of light modification.
